Beating Blue Monday: Dads Rock Is Here for You

Blue Monday—dubbed the “most depressing day of the year”—is here. Sure, it’s more myth than science, but there’s no denying that January can feel a little heavy, especially if you’re a new dad. Sleep deprivation, endless nappies, and trying to figure out what your baby wants can leave you feeling drained. But hey, you’re not in this alone—Dads Rock has your back!

The Rollercoaster of New Fatherhood

Let’s face it: becoming a dad is a wild ride. It’s full of incredible highs (baby’s first smile!) and some pretty challenging lows (wait, when did I last sleep more than three hours?) Many new dads find themselves grappling with things like:

  • Feeling low or anxious

  • Struggling to bond with their baby

  • Feeling like your relationship’s taken a backseat

  • Wondering why you’re the only one who feels this way

Newsflash: You’re not the only one! Around 14% of new dads experience mental health challenges during the perinatal period (from pregnancy through your baby’s first year). The important thing? You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

Dads Rock: Your Dad-Sized Safety Net

We get it. Being a dad isn’t always easy, and we’re here to help. Dads Rock is Scotland’s go-to support hub for new and soon-to-be dads who feel like their mental health could use a boost.

Our New Dad Support is the first of its kind in Scotland, designed specifically for dads in that whirlwind first year of parenthood. What’s it all about? We connect you with our trained peer support volunteers—real parents who know what it’s like. These legends listen, support, and help you navigate the ups and downs of dad life, one step at a time.

How Can We Help You?

If you’re feeling the strain, don’t sweat it—help is just a click away:

  • Drop Us a Line: Email Rachel directly rachel@dadsrock.org.uk or check out the New Dad Support page.

  • Referrals Welcome: Your GP, midwife, or health visitor can also connect you with us.

  • Location Isn’t an Issue: Whether you’re in the Highlands or down in the Borders, we’ve got you covered.

And if you’re in Edinburgh, Glasgow or North Ayrshire, check out our Dad groups. A place to relax, cuppa in hand, and a chance to hang out with your wee one (and other dads) while our Family Workers are on hand for support.

Why It Matters

Here’s the thing: when dads thrive, children do too. Studies show that dads’ mental health directly impacts their children’s well-being. So, taking care of yourself isn’t just good for you—it’s good for your wee one too.

With around 60,000 new dads in Scotland each year, we know plenty of you might need a little extra support. That’s why the peer support service was set up!

Want to Pay It Forward?

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “I wish I’d had this when I became a dad!” Great news: you can help make that happen for someone else. We’re always on the lookout for volunteers to join our peer support team. If you’re a good listener with a bit of spare time, take a look at our Perinatal Peer Support Volunteer page or contact Rachel rachel@dadsrock.org.uk to find out more.

Here’s the Bottom Line

Blue Monday or not, being a new dad is no walk in the park. But you’re not alone, and you’re stronger than you think. Whether you need someone to talk to, a friendly group to join, or just a reminder that you’re doing great, Dads Rock is here for you—and remember, you’ve got this, Dad! 💪
