Dads Rock with Students!
This year with the help of Edinburgh Napier University and University of Edinburgh, we managed to secure four new recruits. We had a chat with them to find out more about their time at Dads Rock…
First up was Kira, one of our social work students. “Working with Dads Rock has provided me with a lot of experience - I am working directly with a wide range of people. I currently have a relatively small caseload of young dads that I work with, which is great as it allows me to have more 1:1 time with each of the people I work with - something I like about Dads Rock's projects. Ultimately, working here has provided me with opportunities to expand my knowledge in working with fathers and families to develop and offer a unique support package. Greg and Amy have provided good support to myself, and I enjoy working in this environment as there is a lot of support from the other staff.”
Angela, also a social work student said. “Dads Rocks Philosophy embraces the standards and ethical principles of the social work course which emphasises the importance of social justice, self-determination and participation/co-production with the people who use the services. I didn’t have much experience working in this area, however this placement is giving me the chance to improve my skills working with children and families.”
Stuart, our newest member, and a social work student stated - “I’m thankful to have been given this opportunity and I’m very excited to see what it’s actually like to operate within a social work setting. Hopefully by the end of my placement I’ll be able to look back on this experience in a positive light and use it to help me going forward.”
And finally, Megan, our marketing student told us “Working at Dads Rock is giving me some really valuable experience working within an organisation, and alongside a great team of people. I’m doing a variety of work from posting to social media, editing the website, creating new content and much more. I’ve been able to put what I've learnt at uni into practice, as well as learn a lot of new things - which is very exciting!”
Dads Rock founder and Services Manager, Thomas, said - “It's an absolute pleasure to have students join our team. As someone who studied at Napier University and at Edinburgh University, I understand the value of a placement, and remember how it feels joining a new organisation for a short time. It's really great to be able to give something back. To give students the chance to see how a charity runs, and the different types of work they can get involved in. Students really add value to our team, they bring a different way of looking at things, fresh, good ideas and a great energy. Offering places to students is something we want to continue to do for all these reasons.”
