Dads Rock Academy is Scotland's first and only rock academy for young people and their parents. It offers weekly rock band tuition to kids and their dads, as well as giving them a free instrument whilst they attend the academy. Dads Rock Academy is open for young people aged 7-16 years to attend. The idea is that the families learn together, having a shared experience of learning how to rock!
Having witnessed the power of kids and music at the playgroups, it was a natural step to offer music tuition. Music tuition can be expensive and therefore prohibitive for many families, Dads Rock Academy is able to provide weekly low cost tuition.
The tuition is delivered at Edinburgh College’s Music Box in Sighthill. The tutors are students of Edinburgh College, gaining valuable work experience.
The tuition runs from October to June each year. In June the students put on an end of year show for family and friends. Throughout the year the academy students also perform gigs at local events. Examples of venues already performed at include: The National Museum of Scotland and Social in the Square (in St. Andrew’s Square).
Dads Rock Academy teaches the following: Bass Guitar, Drums, Guitar, Keyboard, Vocals.
In the first year of Dads Rock Academy there were 26 students, this was made up of young people and dads.
In the second year (2014) there were 67 students, made up of young people, dads, mums, and grandparents.
In 2014 Dads Rock Academy became a standalone social enterprise.
